Your Wedding

Dear Friends,
First, let me congratulate you on your upcoming wedding and wish you great joy. What you are wanting to do is a good thing. God invented marriage and He doesn’t have bad ideas. I can only hope that the two of you will be blessed in your marriage as much as my wife and I have been.

Second, there is a reoccurring issue that seems to come up almost every time I meet with couples preparing for marriage: “What if we’re not sure we are Christians?” It’s a good question, and one I’d love to discuss further with you, but let me share with you just briefly what is at the core of Christianity.

One of the great misconceptions about Christianity, is that it’s on par with all the other world religions, that it’s simply another set of rules. People say, “Islam has its rules, and if you follow them you’ll be a good person and get to go to Heaven” or “Buddhism has its rules, and if you follow them you’ll be a good person and get to go to heaven.”

At the core of Christianity is the belief that none of us are “good enough” to get to Heaven.  The Bible tells us that “Our righteousness is like filthy rags” and that “all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.” Because we are in this fallen state, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to live a life of perfect righteousness, die on the cross in our stead (taking upon himself on the cross the penalty for our sin), and rose from the dead three days later (showing himself victorious over death).  He was our substitute, and he exchanged his righteousness (goodness) for our sin (wickedness), suffering in our place.

The word Christian means a follower of Christ.  It’s used of someone who puts their faith (or trust) in Christ. So, if you think you’re going to Heaven because you’re a “good person,” you’re not a Christian.  If, however, you realize that you’re not good enough to go the Heaven, but have placed your trust in Christ and what He has done on your behalf, you’re a Christian, and you’ve been adopted into the family of God.

Again, if this doesn’t make sense to you or you have questions, I’d love to meet with you and discuss this further.

God’s richest blessing to you both.
