THE PASSOVER THE LORD’S SUPPER
In the old age of law and the prophets
In the new age of the kingdom
Was the great festival meal of people.
Is to be the new celebratory God’s meal of God’s people.
They remembered the Passover sacrifice, the exodus from Egypt, the new beginning for covenant people.
To remember the sacrificial death of Jesus, bringing freedom from sin, the new covenant of the Spirit
By participating, Jews associated themselves with this salvation and covenant.
By participating, Jesus’ followers associate with his redemption and covenant.
Looking back to the exodus and forward to God’s salvation. Looking back to the cross and forward to the Kingdom.
OLD COVENANT
Established at Sinai after Passover. Exodus 24:3-8 and officiated by Moses NEW COVENANT
Established in Jerusalem during Passover 22:14-20 and officiated by the greater Moses – Jesus
Sacrifice: Bulls - Blood sprinkled on the Altar and the people Sacrifice: Jesus - Blood sprinkled on the heavenly altar (Hebrews.9) and symbolically the people
A covenant cut by the nation of Israel (If we don’t obey, may we be like these sacrifices)
A Covenant cut by the Greater Israel – Jesus (who obeyed perfectly and takes Israel’s punishment for its failures)
